We believe that gender is an art and much like Susan Sontags 'Against Interpretation' the over intellectualisation of art ruins it's beauty. We are also accepting Sontag's essay as we do not give the viewer the answer to the question of gender. We hope that through our exploration the viewer will come to their own conclusion of what gender is. Research: We researched sontags 'Against Interpretation'. We chose to do predominately visual research as our visuals needed to be effective in order to get the message across. We also did not want to answer the question for the viewer , simply explore it , meaning that visual research was prioritised. We experimented early on with creating content that could not be intellectualised and its only purpose was to appeal to our senses and be aesthetically pleasing. Our work can certainly be intellectualised but during production we tried to solely create something beautiful. We took inspiration from various fashion films online such as 'does this come in man size?' by Danielle McGregor which explores masculinity through fashion. We brainstormed objects and settings that are associated with and define gender and hoped to essentially turn those definitions upside down. We also knew that music choice would be essential to setting the mood of the film and researched various possible song choices on Spotify and YouTube. Outcomes/Questions Our film has proposed the following questions to the viewer: What is gender? Is gender different from sex? What is masculinity/ femininity? What defines gender? What is societies view on gender? How does society affect gender? Are we held back by gender? Is there more than two genders? Can we decide our gender? We believe we have created a visually effective film that provides a space for the viewer to question not only their own views on gender but also genders role in society. We have achieved our goals of not over intellectualising the video or trying to answer the difficult question and allowing the viewer to come to their own conclusions. Our final piece
